A Different World is back on Netflix, and its sequel premieres later this month. A whole new generation is about to meet Hillman.
Hillman was never real.
But what it showed us was.
That's why I brought seven of us back together. Most of us built our careers alongside one another at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri, a small HBCU most people have never heard of.
More Than a College: How HBCUs Change Lives is out this morning.
Some of these stories, I hadn't heard until we recorded:
A staff member who applied for more than 200 jobs before an HBCU was the one that said yes. Passports purchased so students could leave the country for the first time. A 2:00 a.m. drive to an IHOP in the rain because a student had no way home
A young man sleeping in his car who walked away with a room, a meal plan, and a scholarship.
Today that same group represents Harvard, the NAACP, Salesforce, a vice president's office at one of the CSUs, two admissions shops, and one person who works with universities around the world. All of it out of one small school in Missouri.
And we didn't get through half of it. Part two is coming.
If this episode moves you, send it to one person. Have a great week!
